New Zealand’s Sky Taps TVU Networks’ Multi-Camera Remote Production System for Two Major Sporting Events

The TVU RPS multi-channel live remote production solution was used by New Zealand's Sky Pay TV provider to supply extra material during the Beijing Winter Games and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. 

The broadcaster intends to adopt the same transmission technique for the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024 as a result of the extremely positive results at both high-profile events.

Sky, on the other hand, need more extra feeds for its coverage, so they used the TVU RPS frame-synchronized remote production system, employing a single six-channel RPS encoder locally and a six-channel RPS decoder in New Zealand.

The method proved to be incredibly cost-effective and effective because of its utilization of common commodity internet and top-notch HEVC encoding.

For Sky, TVU RPS provided extra content for the Beijing Winter Games and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.

According to Kerry Phelvin, Sky's Technical Production Manager, "Our TVU system was rock solid for both events." Our TVU system was operational for 16 days straight during the Beijing Games, working nonstop. 

Over 30 terabytes of data were transferred throughout that time on a faultless TVU RPS system. In addition to using this again for the Summer Games in Paris, we might also obtain a second RPS.

Sky employed RPS to transmit two studio return feeds and six unilateral feeds for the Beijing Games between the international broadcast center and Sky's main studio and transmission facility in Auckland. 

The unilateral streams transmitted a variety of programs, including extended format time-shifted replays, local beauty shots, and regional in-studio stand-ups, that were absent from the main host broadcaster channel. 

The main purpose of the return feeds was to keep an eye on Auckland studio productions. Sky used a very similar set-up to broadcast the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

During such high-profile live sporting events, Phelvin credits TVU support as saving his life: "As always, TVU support was excellent. 

We realized that we were lacking an SDI-to-SDI connection for RPS at the Beijing Winter Games. The TVU support staff in Shanghai quickly located one and had it sent to our lodging in the mountains. No inquiries were made, and there was no invoice sent. Brilliant!
